How personalised care and community engagement transformed the life of an elderly lady facing loneliness and health challenges
Situation
Martha, a White British woman living alone in a council flat, has a history of stress-related eczema, high anxiety, high blood pressure, and poor mobility due to arthritis. Despite enjoying socialising with family and friends, the lockdown disrupted her routine, leaving her feeling isolated. Previously, Martha attended church services every Sunday with the help of church members, and her neighbour and her niece visited her weekly.
Challenge
Upon initiating a care package, Martha felt uncomfortable with the British Asian assigned Care Worker and expressed a preference for a White British Care Worker. Additionally, she experienced increasing loneliness and isolation, spending most of her time at home watching television.
Support
Hopscotch Homecare addressed Martha’s initial discomfort by explaining the extensive training and high standards of all Care Workers, regardless of their cultural background. To build trust, a consistent set of Care Workers was assigned to Martha. To combat her loneliness, the team collaborated with Martha’s social worker to refer her to a day centre.
Care Workers also spent more time engaging with Martha, watching television and completing puzzles with her.
